India is known for its rich and diverse culinary heritage, with a variety of dishes, ingredients, and beverages that reflect the culture and history of the country. Now, the world has also recognized the excellence of Indian cuisine, as it ranked 11th on the list of the 100 best cuisines in the world for 2023.

TasteAtlas Releases The Annual List Of The Best Cuisines

TasteAtlas, a Croatia-based online food and travel guide, released the annual list of the 100 best cuisines in the world on December 12, 2023. The list is based on the audience votes for the ingredients, dishes, and beverages of each cuisine, as well as the ratings and reviews of the food experts and travelers.

The list features cuisines from different regions and continents, showcasing the diversity and richness of the global gastronomy. Italian cuisine topped the list, followed by Japan and Greece occupying the second and third spots respectively. India, of course, made it to the list, grabbing the 11th spot with an average rating of 4.54 out of 5.

Indian Cuisine: A Blend Of Flavors, Aromas, And Colors

Indian cuisine is a blend of flavors, aromas, and colors, influenced by various factors such as geography, climate, religion, history, and trade. It consists of a wide range of dishes, from spicy curries and biryanis to creamy dals and kormas, from crispy dosas and parathas to soft naans and rotis, from tangy chutneys and pickles to sweet halwas and laddoos, and many more.

Some of the most popular and best-rated dishes of Indian cuisine, according to TasteAtlas, are:

  • Tandoori dishes: These are dishes cooked in a clay oven called tandoor, which gives them a smoky flavor and a charred crust. Some of the examples are tandoori chicken, tandoori paneer, tandoori naan, and tandoori fish.
  • Butter garlic naan: This is a type of flatbread made with refined flour, yeast, yogurt, butter, and garlic. It is cooked in a tandoor and served hot with a dollop of butter on top. It goes well with any curry or gravy dish.
  • Murgh makhani: This is also known as butter chicken, and is one of the most famous dishes of Indian cuisine. It consists of chicken pieces marinated in yogurt and spices, cooked in a tandoor, and then simmered in a rich and creamy sauce made with tomatoes, butter, cream, and more spices.
  • Chicken tikka: This is a dish of bite-sized chicken pieces marinated in yogurt and spices, skewered, and cooked in a tandoor. It is usually served with mint chutney, onion rings, and lemon wedges.

Indian Cuisine: A Treasure Trove Of Ingredients And Products

Indian cuisine is also a treasure trove of ingredients and products, some of which are unique to the country and some of which are widely used around the world. Some of the most popular and best-rated ingredients and products of Indian cuisine, according to TasteAtlas, are:

  • Garam masala: This is a spice blend that consists of various whole or ground spices, such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, coriander, nutmeg, and black pepper. It is used to add flavor and warmth to many dishes, such as curries, biryanis, and kormas.
  • Ghee: This is a type of clarified butter that is made by simmering butter and removing the milk solids and water. It has a nutty flavor and a high smoke point, making it ideal for frying, sautéing, and baking. It is also used as a spread, a condiment, and a ritual offering in Hinduism.
  • Paneer: This is a type of fresh cheese that is made by curdling milk with an acidic agent, such as lemon juice or vinegar, and then draining and pressing the curds. It has a mild flavor and a firm texture, and does not melt when heated. It is used to make various dishes, such as paneer butter masala, palak paneer, and paneer tikka.
  • Basmati rice: This is a type of long-grained rice that is grown in India and Pakistan. It has a fragrant aroma and a fluffy texture, and is often used to make dishes such as biryani, pulao, and khichdi.

Indian Cuisine: A Delight For The Palate And The Soul

Indian cuisine is not just a delight for the palate, but also for the soul. It is a reflection of the diversity, creativity, and spirituality of the country and its people. It is a cuisine that celebrates the seasons, the festivals, the traditions, and the emotions of life.

It is also a cuisine that has influenced and been influenced by other cuisines of the world, such as Persian, Mughlai, British, Portuguese, Chinese, Thai, and more. It is a cuisine that is constantly evolving and adapting, while retaining its essence and identity.

It is a cuisine that deserves to be among the best in the world, and one that everyone should try at least once in their lifetime.
